Chapter 21

R iding his bike every morning, like Fe had suggested, was like taking a shower in well-being. Shawn slept deeper, woke up more refreshed and energetic, and finished work more efficiently. His mood improved so much, not even Stewarts’ latest attempts to make his life miserable—replacing the computers in the ICU physician’s room with slower ones—bothered him.

That Saturday after Halloween, he’d awakened late to three reassuring text messages from Fe, sending him pictures of Aidan in the hotel where she took him for the weekend. God bless her. He looked happier than he’d ever seen him, playing in the water park with the other kids.

And it must’ve been the extra sleep, but that late afternoon, as he pedaled his bike along his favorite path, Shawn felt like his brain had gotten brighter.

Now in November, the rest of the country prepared to face the winter, while Florida prepared for the best time of the year. The sky was incredibly blue. The trees lining the path were greener than ever. Devoid of the usual humidity, the air was crisp, and the temperature in the pleasant high sixties.

His thoughts unraveled in front of him to be dissected in a new perspective.

She kissed me back.

But this time it felt different than the first time.

As his thoughts raced at lightning speed, his physician’s brain glued together the clues .

The tenderness in her touch when Fe responded to his kiss on Halloween. The way she trembled in his arms when she learned about the threatening letters. The way she’d gone beyond the call of duty to help him rest by taking Aidan. Her reassuring texts this weekend. What does all that mean ?

His physician’s brain whispered the diagnosis, She loves me, too.

Shawn pedaled at top speed on the way back home, not fighting the thoughts, or clarifying what the word “too” meant in that case. The cool breeze refreshed the blooming heat on his face, as the overwhelming realization sank in.

For the first time since that day, months back, when fate made him crash his bike into Fe, he gave himself permission to open the gates. The dreams he’d long ago filed as delusions in the back of his mind, made their way back, flooding him.

Yes. He wanted her, but not for one night. He wanted her all the way—from Paris, to grandchildren, to growing old together. That morning they met, he’d seen it so clearly he feared he’d gone insane. Could those visions be an echo from a different dimension? A potential alternative reality he still could slide himself into?

Did he dare to tempt his luck?

He left his bike in his garage and went straight to his home office. From his desk drawers, he fetched his leather bound notebook and wrote:

Step #1. Find another speech therapist for Aidan.

On his desktop computer, he searched for the email he’d been neglecting to answer for a week. His contact at the Smith Center informed him that a position would be opening in the four-year-old program, and Aidan could join after his birthday, February fifth.
